MUSICAL ITINERARIES: Four Last Songs

W H A T :   San Francisco Symphony: MTT conducts Strauss
W H E N :   through Sunday, Nov 21, 2010 2:00pm
W H E R E : Davies Symphony Hall

The San Francisco Symphony brings together two masters of musical storytelling. Schubert’s music from Rosamunde was originally written as incidental music for a play now forgotten. Luckily for listeners, this extraordinary music enjoyed a different fate. Strauss’s ravishing Four Last Songs, featuring soprano Elza van den Heever, represents an essential staple of the late Romantic repertory. The evening concludes with Strauss’s magnificent Ein Heldenleben, a semi-autobiographical paean to the artist as hero.

“Whoever loves voices, will love Elza van den Heever.”—FRANKFURTER RUNDSCHAU
