CITY: The New Florence

The new Florence of Giuseppe Poggi
Until February 29, 2012

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Italy’s Unification, and of the bicentenary of the Florentine architect Giuseppe Poggi’s birth, the Historic Archives of Florence presents a documentary exhibit focusing on the urban and architectural transformations of Florence in 1865, when it became the capital of the newly formed Kingdom of Italy. Through documents, maps, photographs and painted panoramas, the exhibit reconstructs the history of the projects that have forever changed the face of the city of Florence, such projects include the expansion of the urban plan and the necessary adaptation of the infrastructure, the services and the building of the town, in order to transfer the capital from Turin to Florence. Poggi’s work to determine the new structure of the city is well represented by the numerous drawings on display, along with portraits and personal objects belonging to the architect, such as notebooks, drawing pens and writing desks.
