This year, the Junior Museum & Zoo turns 75! Founded in 1934 by Josephine O’Hara and Josephine Deveneck in a local elementary school, the Junior Museum and Zoo was the first children’s museum west of the Mississippi and has been a local leader in children’s science education since its inception. • Rinconada Park

History: Rinconada is Palo Alto’s second oldest park (after El Camino). Established in 1922, it was originally called Waterworks after a nearby well and reservoir. Two years later it was renamed Rinconada (Spanish for corner) through a contest sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.

• Children’s Library

The Children’s Library, the oldest free standing children’s library in the country, was designed by noted local architects Birge and David Clark and built in the Spanish Colonial Revival style.
